TOLMAR Uro-Oncology Symposium

Dr Behfar Ehdaie is an assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medical College and surgeon on the urology service in the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre. He holds a joint appointment as a biostatistician in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He has expertise in minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of urologic malignancies, including prostate cancer and kidney tumours.

Dr Ehdaie's primory focus is in MRI image-guided procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. He has a special interest in actively monitoring prostate cancer patients using state-of-the art imaging technology and in directing organ-sparing approaches for curative therapeutic interventions. Dr Jay D. Raman, M.D. is currently Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Urology at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Centre.

Dr Raman's clinical practice focuses on robotic-assisted surgery for upper and lower tract urologic cancers having completed over 1,500 such cases. His basic science research centres on infectious complications following prostate needle biopsy and gene expression profiling of urothelial carcinoma, while his major clinical research efforts revolve around staging and therapy for upper-tract urothelial carcinoma. Professor Deborah Kuban, Division Head and Executive Director of The MD Anderson Cancer Network for the Division of Radiation Oncology, University of Texas.

Professor Kuban's specific areas of interest include radiation outcomes and quality of life after treatment, a multidisciplinary approach and novel agents combined with radiation. She visited Australia during August 2016 for the 3rd annual TOLMAR Uro-Oncology Symposium and talks here about personalized medicine:

  1. strategies for adapting to patients; and
  2. novel strategies for upcoming changes in the field of radiotherapy

Professor David Penson, Hamilton and Howd Chair in Urologic Oncology at Vanderbilt University, Tennessee.

Professor Penson's specific areas of interest include the comparative effectiveness of treatment options in localised prostate cancer and the impact of the disease and its treatment on patients' quality of life. Understanding the Humanistic Values and Challenges in Prostate Cancer Survivorship

World Surfing Champion, Layne Beachley talks candidly with her husband and INXS member, Kirk Pengilly, about the emotional trials and vulnerabilities of facing a diagnosis of prostate cancer and supporting Kirk through surgery. As a carer, Layne shares the importance of maintaining her own network of support to help with the distress, pain and anxiety she experienced, whilst Kirk, now cancer-free is encouraging men to talk about prostate cancer, share their stories and challenges faced - to help others through it.
